What is Blue Carbon?

Blue Carbon is the carbon that is stored by marine and coastal ecosystems such as mangrove forests, seagrass meadows and seaweed.

CarbonEthics focuses its work on Blue Carbon Ecosystems because these ecosystems can store up to 10 times more carbon than terrestrial forests! So they play a critical role in addressing the climate crisis.

Unfortunately, this ecosystem is estimated to have the highest rate of destruction among any other ecosystem on earth. Globally, we have lost up to half the world’s mangroves since the 1940s and seagrass since just 1990 mainly due to human activities. (Conservation International, 2019)

We strive to limit the impacts of global climate crisis. We believe in community-centric carbon sequestration - working hand in hand with local communities to protect and restore the coastal ecosystems that help safeguard our climate.

What is Carbon Offset?

Carbon offsetting is about reducing carbon emissions in the atmosphere in equal proportion to our production.

When we offset, we fund projects that avoid, reduce or remove carbon emissions from the atmosphere.

For example, if you take round flight trip from Jakarta to Bali, you will emit around 350 kg of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. It means you can plant 18 mangrove trees to absorb and compensate for the emissions from that trip.

Blue Carbon Ecosystems Conservation

We offset carbon footprints via the direct restoration and conservation of blue carbon ecosystems by planting mangrove trees, seagrass and seaweed through an innovative partnership with local farmers.

Our current work is focused in Thousand Islands, Jakarta, Bintan Island and Bali.

Besides helping to cultivate a healthy coastal ecosystem that has quantifiable climate and carbon benefits, this partnership has the added benefit of improving the livelihoods for participating coastal communities.
